Trust ~ Hebrew Word Study

I would like to begin sharing just some short Hebrew Word studies. These Word revelations have helped me much when reading The Bible and seeing things in a way I didn't see them before.

Today we will look at one of the Hebrew words for "trust".

Gesenius' Hebrew Lexicon defines trust as to set ones hope and confidence upon, to be secure fearing nothing and is also translated as confidence, security, and hope.

In Hebrew the word for trust is b'tach. It is spelled with the Hebrew letters bet, tet, and, a chet.

The pictograph of the letters in this world show us what trust really is.

BET

A bet is a picture of tent, home or family and speaks of being inside, abiding and rest. When speaking of trust "in" is frequently added to it.

Psalm 33:21 For our heart shall rejoice in Him, Because we have trusted in His holy name.

A home and family are places that can and should be associated with safety, security, trust and rest. Trust is about being on the inside.

Being "in" covenant with God through His Son Yeshua is about being in His family.

II Corinthians 1:9 Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead, 10 who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us

Ephesians1:13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,

The Gospel of John contains many references to "in Him", more than any of the other gospels. According to Steven Coxhead on his website Berith Road (1) The gospel of John records that "Rebirth by the Spirit is necessary for entering "into" the kingdom of God (John 3:5), and for experiencing eternal life and immortality (John 3:6). In the new covenant age" (into inserted and bold mine)

I John 4:15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.

There is no security or trust outside of Him. In Him there is nothing to fear.

TET

A tet is a picture of something coiled like a snake or I have also read it can be like a basket When making a basket the fibers are wrapped and coiled around in the weaving process. I think of how a baby loves to be swaddled and wrapped tightly in a blanket. It seems to be soothing to babies to be wrapped in this way. To be unswaddled biblically was a likened to abandonment.

Ezekiel16:4As for your nativity, on the day you were born your navel cord was not cut, nor were you washed in water to cleanse you; you were not rubbed with salt nor wrapped in swaddling cloths.

It can also represent distinguishing what is good. The letter tet is the first letter in the Hebrew word for good

Psalm 34:8 Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

Trust is to Distinguish that He is good and to be wrapped and swaddled in the goodness of His everlasting arms

Deuteronomy 33:27 The eternal God is your refuge (place of trust), And underneath are the everlasting arms..

CHET

A chet is a picture of a fence which surrounds protects, and embraces. Compassion and favor are words that use the letter chet and can be considered things that surround.

Psalm 32:10 Many sorrows shall be to the wicked; But he who trusts in the LORD, mercy shall surround him.

Trust has to do with being surrounded and protected in His mercy.

All three Hebrew letters come with the idea of being on the inside, surrounded, and protected.

According to the word picture definition we could define trust as:

To abide and rest inside the goodness of God protected, embraced, and surrounded by His compassion and favor.

Proverbs 18:10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.

Great Scripure References for Why We can Trust in Him

The furnishings of what is inside the house of trusting Him are listed in the below scriptures helping to remind us of how vital it is to be in covenant with God through knowing Yeshua (Jesus) and to trust in Him completely.

John 3:15 whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

John 3:18 He who believes in Him is not condemned

John 5:24 he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.

Acts 10:43 whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.

Acts 17:28 for in Him we live and move and have our being.

Romans 4:13,24 righteousness of faith...shall be imputed to us who believe in Him

II Corinthians 1:20 For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen

II Corinthians 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Ephesians 1:4 He chose us in Him

Ephesians 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

Ephesians 1:11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance.

Ephesians 1:13 In Him you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.

Ephesians 3:12 we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him.

Colossians 2:10 you are complete in Him

I John 5:14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.

I Chronicles 5:20 He heeded their prayer, because they put their trust in Him

Psalm 18:30 He is a shield to all who trust in Him.

Psalm 28:7 My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped

Psalm 33:21 our heart shall rejoice in Him,Because we have trusted in His holy name.

Psalm 34:8 Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

Psalm 34:22 The LORD redeems the soul of His servants,And none of those who trust in Him shall be condemned.

Psalm 37:5 Commit your way to the LORD,Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.

Psalm 37:40 He shall deliver them from the wicked, And save them, Because they trust in Him.

Proverbs 30:5 He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.

Lamentations 3;24 “ The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “ Therefore I hope in Him!”

Nahum 1:7 The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.

Understanding the Hebrew language will really open your eyes to the scriptures. This was great reading for my morning, and really touched my heart. Thanks!

Thank you Tamarajo to opening my eyes so I could see the passages of Scripture you quoted a little more clearly. Word studies are very beneficial. They are an essential part of my sermon preparation. If you don't understand the nuances of the original languages, you will sometimes lose something in the translation.

Hi David I really enjoy biblically Word studies. You are correct a lot of times we miss things when we don't dig a little deeper into the original concepts of the words. Thank you for reading.

Informative. There is much confustion of the Bible because many people don't understand that language changes ofver time and place.

Tamarajo Hub Author 19 months ago

Thank you dahoglund You are right language and word associations change with culture which is why I love the word picture concepts because the concepts never change. Which makes the Hebrew version of scriptures so reliable. They have been meticulously copied so faithfully by the Jewish people for thousands of years and the word meanings have never changed.

Thank you for this word study. It has helped me a lot. I am drawing ever closer to to the actual language of the Word. You are a blessing for putting this together.

Tamarajo profile image

Tamarajo Hub Author 7 months ago

Hello Hyphenbird, The original Biblical language gets more and more fascinating and revealing of God's goodness, character, and message intent. Modern languages are always changing but just like our God He never changes and neither does His Word. The word studies always agree with already revealed truth and add depth to our understanding about His truth. I believe that the way He designed the language was so we could not twist and turn it to suit ourselves but it would always mean what it always meant so we can always "trust" Him in it.

Thank you for stopping by. I appreciate your comment and your visit.

Thanks you, Tamarajo. This has been the premier word of my life for the last two years. I'm learning to trust God where I cannot see.

Tamarajo profile image

Tamarajo Hub Author 7 months ago

Hello ithabise I think learning to trust Him in the unseen is the struggle we all face especially in the light of physical circumstance.

What I most understand in this lesson is that "in Him" is the safest place we can be.

Blessed to have you stop by and comment.
