Open My Eyes That I May See
72
I was reading yesterday morning out of my interlinear Hebrew Bible and this verse stood out to me
Open my eyes, that I may see Wondrous things from Your law. ~ Psalm 119:18
Next I was doing my New Testament reading for the day and this was one of the verses.
...And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. ~ Luke 24:45
I also have a daily verse on my Google home page from Bible Gateway and this was also the verse of the day:
The secret of the LORD is with those who fear Him,
And He will show them His covenant. ~ Psalm 25:14
I like to take cues like these as the Lord wanting to show me something which is the topic of the hub.
The first thing that came to mind concerning these verses is that it is the ultimate privilege to have access to His written Word and more importantly His Holy Spirit to teach and reveal to us the depths of its meaning to us.
...the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things. ~ John 14:26
I don't think many of us think about the fact that the truth is hidden to us apart from the revealing work of the Holy Spirit. Without His work in us we cannot understand the truth which is why I think His Word seems like foolishness to the rest of the world.
...the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. ~ I Corinthians 2:14
In reading John chapter 15 where Jesus is discussing with His disciples the importance of abiding in the Him. He begins to tell them the secret of how to obtain this spiritual discernment.
You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. ~John 15:14-15
Revelation is a result of having an abiding relationship with God that is evidenced by our submission of obedience to His will and His ways. When we do His commands by loving (being loyal) to God and loving people we are in a position to "see".
After Jesus death His loyal followers were walking on the road on there way to Emmaus and they were talking with Jesus and didn't know it and when they realized who they had been talking to they said this...
“Did not our hearts burn within us while he opened to us the Scriptures?” Luke 24:32"
We also see this confirmed in the previous verse I shared about the secret of the Lord being with those who fear Him.
Another portion of scripture that shows us this in the book of Acts
Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul. ~ Acts 16:14
I noticed in this verse that the Lord opens the heart of one who is worshiping Him. Could this be a key to receiving revelation?
The second thing I notice in all of these verses is that God has secrets.
Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets. ~ Amos 3:7
God's truth is like a hidden treasure.
...the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. ~ Matthew 13:44
In previous hubs I described a revelation by Brad Scott from Wild Branch Ministries called Agri-Bio-Linguistics where God uses simple things such as Agriculture, Biology, and Language to communicate His truths in ways we can comprehend. He uses the natural things we do understand to communicate spiritual truths. This method is seen in many of the parables that Jesus uses. It also is embedded into the language itself.
The Hebrew word for "open" used in Psalm 119 and 25 (above verses) is galah. Gesenius' Lexicon defines this word to make naked, used of the ear by taking away the hair, or of the face by taking away the veil.
...when one turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. ~ II Corinthians 3:13
Another Word study help tool on the Blue Letter Bible website describes it to mean to open thoroughly. Strong's adds to reveal and expose disclose, uncover, show, reveal, lay bare.
He uncovers deep things out of darkness,
And brings the shadow of death to light. ~ Job 12:22
We see from these definitions that the word "open" here is alluding to something that is hidden and needs to be opened and revealed.
He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, And light dwells with Him. ~ Daniel 2:22
It is interesting to note how much of Christs ministry centered around opening eyes and ears.
back to agri-bio-linguistics. The word galah is also used for a spring or a fountain. When one word is used for two things. The one being the object many times describes something about the other word. In this case Springs or fountains describe the word "open". In another hub"Waterfalls" I wrote about the water coming down from above representing Jesus who came down from heaven and poured out His life for us. this time the description lends to fountains or springs revealing an underground water source which agree and support the above definitions.
...the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” ~ John 4:14
"His love to us is a stream whose source is hidden in eternity" ~ C. H. Spurgeon
John 7 reveals to us that this underground water source is the Holy Spirit dwelling in us.
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit" ~ John 7:38-39
What a revelation! The Holy Spirit sent from Jesus the "Living Water" that came down from heaven living in us and opening our understanding teaching us all things.
...you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things ~ I John 2:27
A fitting quote from Ray C. Stedman from an online article titled "True Human Potential" (1)
"being a Christian means we have an extra dimension to life. There is a hidden resource, an invisible reality, which the world does not have and cannot see. This is not referring to Christ being "up in heaven," lost in space somewhere! Rather, this refers to what Paul has talked about earlier in this letter, "Christ in you, the hope of glory." This extra dimension is not far removed in the reaches of space; it is right within the heart, an untouchable, invisible dimension within us. This is the glory of the Christian life and the secret of its power, joy and courage...Set your hearts" on this hidden resource"
The third thing I see is that God is willing to reveal His secrets.
“The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but those things which arerevealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law. ~ Deuteronomy 29:29
...there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets ~ Daniel 2:28
The pictograph for galah (open) confirms and supports these concepts
The first letter of galah is a picture of a camel. I did a study on the camel in another hub titled Bless and Knee explaining this concept. The camel can symbolize a bearer of blessing through humility. I believe in context of the word "open" we can see that there are hidden benefits and blessings to be opened and revealed.
I will give you the treasures of darkness And hidden riches of secret places,... ~ Isaiah 45:3
The second letter is a lamed and is a picture of a staff symbolizing instruction, teaching, and correction. To receive revelation we need all three of these elements.
He also opens their ear to instruction,
And commands that they turn from iniquity.~ Job 36:10
Lastly is the letter hey and can be a picture of a window symbolizing revelation. Also Hey at the end of the word makes the word female and alludes to what comes from. So we could say Revelation is what comes from being instructed and learning of hidden blessings and treasures God has for us.
“ Eye has not seen, nor ear heard Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. ~ I Corinthians 2
The Psalmist cries out as do I
Make me understand the way of Your precepts; So shall I meditate on Your wonderful works. ~ Psalm 119:27
Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You. ~ Psalm 143:8
It is comforting to note that Paul prayed many prayers for us concerning this. He prayed...
17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe ~ Ephesians 1
He prayed that we...
may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— 19 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge ~ Ephesians 3:18-19
He asked ...
that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God ~ Colossians 1:9-10
In conclusion I am excited to know that God has secrets and hidden treasures He wishes to reveal to us. And as seen in this study He will show them to those who worship, seek, and fear Him. What an indescribable privilege that He would let us in on His secrets.

Nice inspirational study. Psalm 119:18 has been a memory verse for me for years. Psalm 119 in its entirety is a magnificent survey of the Word of God in its essence. Thank you and God bless you.
I really liked this hub. Many people fear the thought of secrets being revealed from Gods word. Maybe its fear of the unknown, maybe its fear of finding out something they have beleived for so long is not true.Maybe its fear of change, and God never changes its that there is so much to God that we have not yet seen, and I beleive its all in his word waiting to be revealed by his spirit to us.This hub clearly exspresses that.Good job!
Tamarajo: Thank you for this has opened up many different avenues of thought and learning for me. Indeed God is allowing me a glimmer into the vastness of His deep knowledge allowing me to submerge myself in Him.
When one of those glimpses into the secret mysteries of God is revealed to me, I am humbled and awed. Them ore I learn, the more I desire to know. Thanks for this Hub Tamarajo. It is a devotional to study on all day long.
This is very instructive Tamara. Thank you for sharing. I feel the same way as you do on this; “I think His Word seems like foolishness to the rest of the world” and that explains so much of the conflict online. We must ask the Author of His Word to interpret His Word. Blessings ~ eddie
that's my prayer that God will continuously open my eyes of understanding to his word and to his hidden treasures.
Your hub was great, thanks for the read.
Tamarajo, I can only say you did an impressive job with this hub, and that I am every single day, oh so thankful that God keeps things simple for me! :)
God is a person God and personally grants insight a time in each person's life so as to be most effective for that individual. He has prepared us for each lesson to be taught. He has painted a picture made up of trials lost and won. Of defeats and victories so that we will see the thing that God wants us to see, so that God can elicit from us the motive to serve Him to His glory. He end of this is the salvation of as many souls as possible and to hasten that great and mighty day of the Lord on the horizon. I especially like the differentiation of knowing and comprehending. Great article, I enjoyed it immensely. Love you sister. Bob.
A beautiful meditation to ponder and reflect upon. I rejoice in your talent and appreciate this special moment with God that you inspired. Thank you.
Forever His
God bless you Sister Tamarajo, you have truly blessed me with this hub. Your title " Open My Eyes That I May See " is very enlightening. Tamarajo..Thank you for such a beautiful and simple explanation of the opening of our eyes by our Heavenly Father. My prayer always is for Him to give me wisdom and to open my eyes to His wonderful truths..
Tamarajo,in your profile it says that you like to explore the hebraic roots of our faith. You might find this website interesting..
Excellent hub voted up and beautiful. This hub presents timeless truths to live by. Unless the Lord open our eyes, we will remain blind to the truth. BY the grace of God our eyes are opened and had seen the light of the Gospel of the Lord JesusChrist. Praise God for opening our eyes. Praise God for revealing His ways to us His children. May you be blessed today and always. Best regards.
Tamarjo, Wonderful insightful hub! This is why it is so important that we spend time with The Lord each day! We must continually pray for discernment and for the Lord to open our spiritual eyes! Thank God for Jesus and His precious Holy Spirit!
As you well stated:"...the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. ~ I Corinthians 2:14" Amen! Again lovely and enlightening! As Cristina said " timeless truths!" Thank you for sharing, In HIS Love, Grace, Joy, Peace & Blessings!
amen to this
You are always sharing what God tells you to share. Being obedient is what God wants in us. Keep on hubbing for the Lord! Voted-Up! And awesome! Much love my friend!!
Great article, and thank you for the follow!
Hey, a well written article - you seem very intelligent and have strong opinions for the existence of God so I would value your opinion and any counter arguments you may have to my argument on how God is a sadist (or non existent).
ahh well you can't argue with that! That all seems very understandable.
But how do you know that your experience with god is the Christian God (or which ever) in particular that you worship and not any of the other thousands of variants? During your experience did God give a sign as to which religious faith is correct or not?
ahh okay well I understand that but what I meant was that you must fall into a category of Christianity? A division? There are over 20,000 (some say 30,000+) divisions of Christianity each with their own interpretations of the Bible and each with their own set of rules, in your experience with God/Christianity, did the sign specify which of these it is that you must follow? Or did you just join the local prominent division of Christianity and call it a sign that it was there for you to go to?
It seems to me that some Christians do not realise that their beliefs of how to live life can vary tremendously to the other 19,999+ divisions of Christianity.
The question "do Christians think homosexuality is morally correct" cannot be a "yes" or a "no" because of the huge differences of opinion present amongst the divisions of Christianity.
A lot of religious people have said that it is their own personal experience with that religion that lead them to believe in what they do, but some of these people believe in sets of religion intolerant to others? Did their personal experience specifically say to exclude all other faiths? And how can a loving God exclude other faiths that teach the exact same morals as the ones he does in his own scripture?
Also, I cannot find any professional opinions other than that of any teachers willing to listen who I have already convinced of my own view.
Moreover, I want to find out how ordinary, non specialist religious people base their decision to believe in such a life changing thing, as that has more implication to the world.
This is SO true, Tamarajo! I have recently been experiencing this in my life recently as I lead a women's group. I have found there is a wrestling and interceeding before the Lord at times to have our understanding of His Word. He most definitely uses pictures to apply a truth. We need to come to understand how and in what way He does speak to us. God bless. Been quite awhile since I've been able to be on Hub pages and it's good to be back reading yours. Always a pleasure!
@Tamarajo
I see, I find it difficult to believe people's "personal experiences" because it seems people of all religions get them, so some if not all must be lying, mistaken or exaggerating when they say that only their religion is correct because of their experiences.
Is there any other argument that you (or anyone else) know of for the existence of a monotheistic God?
Ahh okay! Thank you! Thank you for referring me to the names of those people, it will really help.
Just one last question, what do you say about all of the other people that claim that they have had experiences with their God(s) but are not devoted to Christianity? Are they wrong? Disillusioned?
But if your religion claims that it is the only one that is true, then surely a logical inference is that you disbelieve it when other people tell you they had an experience telling them that their religion (which says that yours is wrong) is true?
That's fair enough, you don't have to answer my questions, thank you for your time :)
Tamarjo, You have done a marvelous job here! The title is so appropriate "Openy My eyes that I may see!" AMEN!
As you wellstated: "I don't think many of us think about the fact that the truth is hidden to us apart from the revealing work of the Holy Spirit. Without His work in us we cannot understand the truth which is why I think His Word seems like foolishness to the rest of the world" AMEN! & AMEN!!
We really do need His Holy Spiirt to open our spiritual eyes so we can see... It is very difficult to understand "FAITH" because you can not see FAITH; but you KNOW it is so... We Believe through FAITH in GOD! "I AM The GOD of Abraham, The GOD of Isaac and The GOD of Jacob..." MATTHEW 22. Who is The Father of our LORD & SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST!
Thank you for sharing, In HIS Love, Grace, Joy, Peace & Blessings! GOD BLESS YOU!
Sister Wow!! Amazing how you got 'eye' in your meditations. The Holy Spirit is so cool like that. It is evident the Holy Spirit has moved on you sista. This is so beautiful. I am listening to the song right now. Tears running down the cheeks. GOD is so Glorious. I just love ya. I really enjoy your studies. I learn a great deal from you. I love the water (galah-waterfalls) so beautiful that message really touched my heart. Amazing Love is our Lord and Saviour. Hugs my sista. Keep the light shining. You will Phil 4:13
I see that Beelzebub came a calling. You handled him with more sweetness than I could have mustered.
Your article is wonderful. I love it and we all need it. Thank you very much.
Dear Tamarajo,
Beautifully written with a well organized use of scripture. It would seem that someone has eyes and are using them to see what God has revealed. I enjoyed your insight, but enjoy even more your willingness to encourage by sharing with us.
"Blessings"
Yes Tamara so many times GOD wants to show us things and we don't always see it so its good when we can recognize it ;). God is good no matter what.
